Some firms don't utilize the Web correctly "What businesses must realize is that they need to take their Web site seriously;" said Stacey Kivel, director of technology services with software applications builder Pinnacle Decision Systems in Middletown, Conn. “A couple of years ago companies created Web pages simply to say 'I’m online,' with little or no thought as to how to conduct business on the Web. But now, companies must rethink how they do business and adapt their site to be more than just online brochures."

Some problems:

	Lack of integration with the company's business plan: "It must support all departments in the company and be in synch with the marketing department," Kivel said. "Too many times, companies create a media blitz and forget to update their Web sites. By coordinating the Web site with the business initiatives taking place in the company; you can ensure that customers are getting a clear and consistent message."
	Underestimating the commitment needed to keep site current: The level of commitment and effort to keep a site current is often too much for a company to handle. In addition to a Webmaster, it also helps for a company to have a person responsible solely for content. This content person doesn't necessarily have to be a techie. In most cases, the content person should come from the business side. The content person is responsible for making sure content is updated and valid at all times.
	Long download times: "It's easy to make the mistake of trying to add too much to a Web page," Kivel said. "Developers clutter the pages with too much text and huge graphic files that take an eternity to download. When building a Web site, you must consider the time it will take for a user to download your pages."
	Poor navigation: The Web site should be designed to allow a visitor to easily access the features with the least number of clicks possible. There are many human factors, user interface issues, and usable design specific to the World Wide Web.
